The Executive Director is responsible for advancing the organization’s overall strategic direction, developing and maintaining programs and operational infrastructure, and serving as a leader both in the community and within the organization. The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day operations of the Agency including, but not limited to, the following: program operations, supervision and development of staff, fund development, fiscal management, and community engagement. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to assemble their Senior Management Team. The Executive Director will be comfortable with the diverse communities that comprise and support the organization. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors, and reports to the Executive Committee of the Board.

1. Strategic Thinking
The Executive Director will be able to envision long-term goals and direction for the organization, develop and implement plans to achieve them, and review and adjust direction, when necessary. This person will be able to identify opportunities that reflect the organization’s values and objectively assess situations to make sound decisions.
2. Leadership
The Executive Director will be a proven leader in their respective community and have the skills to create relationships and collaborate with others to achieve the organization’s mission. This person is passionate about sharing the mission and successes of the organization with the broader community. Internally, this person will understand the importance of culture in an agency and how to build it. This person will have the ability to effectively manage professional relationships including mediation and negotiation skills. This person will present an organized, calm, and reassuring presence to staff.
3. Strong Communication Skills
The Executive Director believes strongly in transparency and open communication. This person will have strong interpersonal skills and be a strategic communicator, understanding what information needs to be shared and when. This person will have the ability to communicate concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Project Management/Organizational Skills
The Executive Director will be able to quickly learn how the agency’s pieces fit together and how the agency works. This person will have strong administrative skills and be able to meet deadlines and work at both a high, conceptual level and at a detailed implementation level (“in the weeds”). This person will be able to multitask but also know when and how to delegate. This person successfully manages the stress of working in a high-responsibility position.
5. Operational Management
The Executive Director will have experience with and be comfortable and capable with utilizing both internal and external resources to develop, maintain, and update agency infrastructure. This person is solution-oriented.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. The Executive Director serves as the staff liaison to the Board; an ex-officio member of all Board committees; and implements all administrative policies as approved by the Board. The ED will coordinate and support administrative functions of board and committee meetings.
2. The Executive Director will be responsible for assembling their Senior Management Team.
3. The Executive Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining community relationships. The ED represents Project Transitions in the community and in the media. The ED develops and manages collaborative efforts with like service providers in the community.
4. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the overall operational functions of the agency are run in an efficient and professional manner, including maintaining up to date Policies and Procedures Manuals for the agency, and ensuring technology and equipment is up to date and meets the needs of the staff.
5. The Executive Director will oversee a director of programs and services who manages all agency programs and monitors program activities. The ED ensures that programs are operating professionally, effectively, efficiently, and within budget.
6. The ED will oversee the Director of Finance who administers all financial responsibilities related to the organization. The ED works with the board treasurer, Director of Finance, and external accountants/consultants as necessary to maintain timely and accurate financial statements, annual audit and tax returns.
7. The Executive Director will oversee a director of human resources who manages employee hiring, retention, evaluation, and when necessary, termination.
8. The Executive Director will oversee a director of development who establishes and maintains all donor relations whether government, public or private. This person will also work closely with the Director of Grants and Compliance to develop compelling grant applications and strong and accurate reporting. The ED is expected to participate in fundraising activities and strategy, and build relationships with major donors, grant funders, and governmental entities.
Requirements:
Minimum
The Executive Director must meet the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- A minimum of five years’ experience as an Executive Director, nonprofit C-Suite position, executive leadership position, or equivalent experience.
- Personal computer proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office Products (MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Preferred
The Executive Director may have the following preferred requirements:
- Experience in nonprofit executive management
- Experience in business and organizational management and development and/or program development
- Experience with or knowledge of LBGTQIA+ issues
- Experience with or knowledge of mental health, substance use, and/or housing issues
About Us:
Project Transitions is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to serving people living with HIV by providing housing, comprehensive support services, recuperative care and hospice in compassionate and caring environments.
What began as a residential hospice facility in 1989, Project Transitions has grown into a direct provider of supportive affordable housing for people living with HIV in Central Texas. With a total staff of more than 30, Project Transitions is dedicated to advancing new programs and solutions to address the full-continuum of HIV-related housing needs in Central Texas. These programs and solutions include Top Drawer Thrift, 101 units of supportive housing across two locations, and a 5-bed hospice service. Project Transitions is ending homelessness among individuals living with HIV/AIDS, one move-in at a time.
Job Details:
This is a full-time position. Because Project Transitions operates 24-hour residential facilities, this position, on occasion, will require flexible, non-traditional hours. This is an in-office position with the occasional ability to work remotely. Candidates are expected to reside in Austin or the surrounding area.
Salary Range: $140,000-$170,000
