Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) seeks a Real Estate/Foreclosure Prevention Staff Attorney to represent low-income homeowners facing foreclosure and/or other issues related to homeownership across the TRLA service area. Issues handled regularly include contracts for deeds, mortgage foreclosure, property tax foreclosure, property tax liens, title disputes, and predatory home purchase arrangements. In addition to litigation, this practice team performs transactional work, conducts outreach, and creates know-your-rights materials to distribute within the community.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Provide direct representation to eligible low-income homeowners in the TRLA service area in state district court;
Provide legal advice and limited pro se assistance to low-income homeowners in the TRLA service area facing foreclosure and homeownership issues;
Manage an individual caseload, with a primary concentration on litigation in state court;
Prepare and conduct community outreach, including conducting Know Your Rights Presentations and working with community partners;
Willingness to travel and take cases across the TRLA service area;
Provide legal support to non-attorney staff assisting with client intake and legal services.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Texas Bar Membership, able to waive into the Texas bar, or otherwise eligible to practice law in Texas (individuals awaiting Texas Bar Exam results are eligible to apply);
Litigation experience preferred;
Preference for applicants who want to work in a border office; and
Demonstrated interest in providing justice to those who need it most, have strong academic credentials and are fluent in Spanish.
