Federal Income Tax Paralegal

$36840 – $50230 / year
TRLA’s tax team represents low-income individuals in tax controversies such as audits (examinations) and collection matters. We also do outreach to low-income and ESL taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities before the IRS and mitigate the devastating effects that the collection of taxes can have on low-income families.
The primary duties of the Federal Income Tax Paralegal, working under the supervision of the Team Manager, include:
Arrange and conduct education outreach events throughout the geographical area to which assigned regarding federal income tax issues.
Prepare and distribute legal educational materials in both Spanish and English including brochures, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and informational videos focused on income tax issues affecting low-income persons for whom English is a second language.
Coordinate, attend, and participate in outreach events and make community legal education presentations regarding federal income tax issues.
Assist TRLA attorneys in the representation of clients before the IRS, and in tax-related litigation.
Conduct eligibility and substantive interviews for potential clients with IRS issues;
Provide basic information and referrals to applicants, including those ineligible for services;
Conduct follow-up of assigned cases, including investigating facts, researching the law, and updating clients on the progress of their cases;
Draft legal documents and prepare IRS forms;
Translate from English to Spanish and Spanish to English;
Maintain current knowledge of federal income tax law that affects low-income taxpayers.
Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into client database and other requirements, such as timekeeping;
Prepare administrative reports required by TRLA;
Any other duties required by the Branch or Team Manager.
Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
Possess knowledge of computer programs such as Adobe and Excel
Possess verbal, reading, and writing skills sufficient to comprehend administrative law manuals and to advocate on behalf of clients.
