Celebrating 25 Years of Nonprofit Austin

This year, Nonprofit Austin at ACC celebrates twenty-five years of service to the Central Texas nonprofit community. From the beginning, our mission has been rooted in a simple but powerful idea: when nonprofit practitioners are supported, equipped, and connected, our entire community grows stronger.

That idea took shape twenty-five years ago when our Executive Director, Barry Silverberg founded this program within Austin Community College. What started as a visionary effort to create accessible and inclusive learning opportunities for nonprofit professionals has evolved into a trusted home for leadership development and professional growth.

Our very first learning opportunity, offered on November 14, 2000, focused on Cyber Volunteer Management. In an era of dial-up internet and clunky desktops, the idea of supporting volunteers online required both imagination and a lot of patience for pages to load. While technology has changed dramatically since then, our commitment to innovation has remained steady.

To every learner, partner, alum, and supporter who has been part of our journey, thank you. You are the reason this work matters and the reason our community continues to thrive.

Here’s to 25 years of learning, leadership, growth, and to the many years of innovation and impact still ahead.

Unleashing the Superpowers of Executives: How Boards Can Help Us Soar

By Monika Kalra Varma, CEO, BoardSource and Jamie Allison, Executive Director, Walter & Elise Haas Fund

We are living in a time of profound change and complexity. Maintaining community safety nets, advancing justice, expanding opportunity, and centering and honoring the dignity of all is more urgent than it has been in recent history. Facing these realities, the world seems to be looking for heroes to save the day. Although cape-clad superheroes are not descending from the sky, if we look around us and within ourselves we can find our superheroes and unleash our collective superpowers to meet the moment.

Nonprofit and philanthropic leaders have always been called to meet extraordinary challenges. Today’s leaders are serving growing needs with fewer or unpredictable resources, guiding teams and communities facing immense trauma, and developing innovative solutions to impossible challenges. They are acting with both courage and imagination, often under intense pressure and public scrutiny. The call to lead with purpose, courage, resilience, and creativity has never been louder and executive leaders are responding.

Designing Great Board Risk Presentations

By Rachel Sams, Lead Consultant and Editor, Nonprofit Risk Management Center

Have you ever sat through a boring board presentation about risk management—complete with endless slides, spreadsheets, and metrics—and thought, “There has to be a better way?”

The good news: You’re right!

But we can’t tell you exactly how to do it.

We think that’s even better news! The beauty of risk management is that your nonprofit can and should customize anything and everything, including your board and committee risk presentations. While we can’t say exactly what will work for you, we can share some principles that will help you keep board risk presentations meaningful and manageable. That will give you more time to spend on the details of exactly what to include—or what we like to call “the fun stuff.”

Know Your Audience and What They Need

When it’s time to draft your briefing, ground yourself in an understanding of what the board’s risk management role is—and is not.

Nonprofit staff teams have primary responsibility for risk identification, action planning, and keeping the board apprised of the team’s approach and progress addressing top risks.
