I wanted to share that I’ll be taking FMLA leave for back surgery starting September 8, 2025, and plan to return on December 8, 2025. During this time, I won’t be checking my office email or phone, but you’ll be in excellent hands with my colleague Roz Gutierrez, Associate Director and my superb team of Maria, Blu, and Erica.
If you need anything while I’m away, please reach out to Roz at rosalind.gutierrez@austincc.edu or 512-223-7080.
Thank you for your support—I look forward to being back in my office in December!

Understand Risk Through the Lens of Your Role
|
Have you ever had a thorny situation you wanted to run by risk professionals who held your same job title in other nonprofits, just to get their take?
Perhaps you wonder how your role or department can work best with others in your organization, and long for some outside perspective on that.
Or maybe you want a playbook of ways to engage your board on risk management issues—without tempting them to wade into day-to-day operations with the staff.
Across the nonprofit sector, many risk managers work in organizations that have no or few other risk professionals on the team. Whether that’s true for you, or you manage a team of risk professionals but long for an outside perspective, all risk managers can benefit from external help and insight. Not all nonprofits can hire an external consultant for risk advice, especially in seasons when funding is tight. But anyone at your nonprofit can reach out for additional perspective on a challenge you face.

Don’t plan for succession. Plan for success.
|
When organizations talk about succession planning, the conversation almost always centers around people. Who will step in when the current CEO retires? Who will lead the development team if the director leaves? It’s a game of musical chairs, hoping there’s a warm, capable body ready to take the next seat. A name gets slotted in to replace another name; boards feel relief that a vacancy won’t linger.
