Understanding the GoFundMe Controversy

As a proud Nonprofit Ally Member of the National Council of Nonprofits (NCN), we’re honored to be part of a network that stands firm in protecting the trust, transparency, and autonomy that nonprofit organizations depend on.

Recently, GoFundMe launched donation pages for more than 1.4 million nonprofits without their knowledge or consent.

While this effort may have been well-intentioned, it sparked serious concerns across our sector:

  • Donor confusion and misrepresentation of nonprofit brands
  • Lack of consent or awareness from the affected organizations
  • Processing fees and platform “tips” that diverted resources
  • SEO tactics that ranked GoFundMe’s pages higher than nonprofits’ own websites
  • Challenges with page removal and required acceptance of terms or sensitive information

In response, NCN swiftly raised these concerns directly with GoFundMe. Thanks to their advocacy and that of others in our sector, GoFundMe issued a formal apology and committed to key corrective actions, including removing unauthorized pages and preventing further harm.

Central Texas Nonprofit Pulse Survey

How are your nonprofit’s vital signs? We understand they may be fluctuating these days, and we would like to hear from you.

In coordination with the Coalition to Assess Federal Funding Impact, Nonprofit Austin invites and strongly encourages you to participate in a region-wide survey to help the community better understand how federal funding changes are impacting nonprofit organizations across Central Texas.

This is ONE SURVEY with a goal of collecting data from every nonprofit in Central Texas. The intention of this cross-sector coalition is to gather moment-in-time insights and data that will help inform collaboration, advocacy, funding support, and wrap around service efforts across our Central Texas community. We will issue a community report in January and further pursue collaboration around our findings soon thereafter.

The Survey:

Will be promoted by many sponsoring organizations in order to ensure broad coverage. We will only accept one survey from each organization, and it must be completed by the chief executive and/or the financial authority in the nonprofit. So please coordinate your response internally.

Should be completed even if you do not currently receive federal funding. Even that informs our data collection.

If you are the executive completing the survey, please know that you may Save and return to the survey at any time. There may be information you need to retrieve that you don’t have immediately at hand.

Timing: Depending on the type(s) of funding you rely on, this survey may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to complete.

All responses will remain confidential and be reported in aggregate.

Closes at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 21
